ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sherri G Raku fired pottery
I started
college as an adult in Phoenix, Ariz. While working full time and going to
school evenings full time I decided I needed to do something to relax. I signed
up for a non credit pottery class. Although the class was very basic in
techniques I fell in love with clay. I then enrolled in credited classes and
the adventure began. When raku firing was introduced I knew I had found my
passion in life. That was 20 yrs ago. I finished my education in Northeastern
Arizona majoring in social work. But my heart was in the clay. I was guest
speaker/demonstrator throughout Arizona with my 55 gal oil barrel raku kiln. I
still love to see people’s faces as the flames shoot and the smoke rolls!
I moved
to Tennessee in 1992 and started on the long road of establishing myself by
doing art shows all over the state. I have won numerous awards at these shows.
My work is displayed in several galleries across the United States.
I have
been published in Ceramics Monthly and Northern Flight Fine Art magazines. I
was also interviewed for the Tennessee Magazine which was published in Oct of
2002.
I love
hand building more than throwing. I mix all my own glazes from recipes I have
used for years. I love the spontaneous color bursts and movement in these
glazes. In Ariz I did dig my own clay but don’t do that now!!!!! As a young
girl I loved to make mud pies and as a big girl I still love making mud pies but
now I call it art!!!!
